Niijima is reputable for being a camping island but lodge/hotels are also available for visitors who are just in the island for relaxation.

Campsite
Located in the eastern side of the island, Nijiima’s 250m (approximately) long campsite is lounging perfectly at the base of a mountain surrounded by thick, healthy, and green trees. The campground is well maintained, has cold showers, washroom, cooking hutch with power source, barbecue grills, and stone tables and chairs.
Use of the ground is free, but registration needs to be done in the registration office which is very close to the Koga stone zoo. Space reservation however is not possible thus, camping area is on a first-come-first-serve basis. The campground lies adjacent to the Habushiura Beach which is 3-5 minutes away by foot.
Hotels/Inns
Niijima has one hotel, a few ryokan (Japanese inns) and several minshuku (smaller version of ryokan usually run by a family) where visitors can comfortably stay.

Niijima Grand Hotel is the the only hotel in the island and is 2 minutes from the airport or 5-minute drive from the port by car. It is 10 minutes walk from Habushiura beach. Phone reservation can be made 04992-5-1661.
Other inquiries and reservation can be made via Tourist Information Center at telephone number 04992-5-0048.
Hi,
Thank you for the excellent information.
Regarding the campsite , Did you carry camp material from Tokyo ? Can we rent it somewhere ?
Thanks !
Hi Amar,
We brought the tent from Tokyo. The campsite in Niijima is an open space and there seem to be no camping gears for rent.
Hi,
I’d like to book a hotel on Niijima but my Japanese is really poor – I don’t think that I could do a phone conversation. Do you know if they have any staff at the TIC who speak English at all? Are the hotels/ ryokans expensive? I found an email address for Niijima TIC too: info@kanko-kyokai-niijima.net
Hello Megan,
You can also book hotels and inns in Niijima on websites like Trip Advisor or Rakuten. I also am not so fluent in Japanese so I use Google translate when booking on Japanese websites. 🙂
I’ve tried searching for hotel/inn in Niijima via Rakuten: http://search.travel.rakuten.co.jp/ds/hotellist/Japan-Tokyo-Niijima
Hope this helps.
Best,
Lakbayer
Thanks so much Lakbayer – I have had some success with the TICs but it is still hard getting information on the different options
Hi,
My girlfriend and I are very interested in going to Nijima in October this year (2017). Firstly your website has been the most useful, thank you. Secondly we are looking for accommodation and have found many nice looking Ryokans, on all the sites before I even type in my dates it says that there is no availability. Did you or anyone else have this when trying to book accommodation? Is this because the entire month of October is generally extreamly busy or is it more likely that we would need to get in contact with them in order to book?
Thank you!
Simon
Hi Simon,
You are right, we indeed encounter the same problem as you are with website saying that either the hotels/ryokans are fully-booked or no room matches the criteria. There is a Niijima Tourist website that provides you a list of different accommodations available in Niijima as well as the url for each ryokan (if there is). Some of them have a reservation inquiry form which might be of help for your accommodation bookings.
The link is: http://niijima-info.jp/plan/stay/
Hope this helps!
Hello,
I would just like to ask, is there a surf school in Niijima island?
Kind regards
Marina
Dear Marina,
We are not aware of any surfing classes in Niijima. However, if you are interested in learning how to surf in Japan, you may coordinate with http://www.surfinginjapan.com or email them at admin@surfinginjapan.com. They may have planned trips to Niijima or they may know instructors located in Niijima Island. Hope this helps.
Regards,
Lakbayer
Thanks for this info! Where is the registration office for the campsite? Is it at the actual campsite? So if I follow google maps to the campsite I’ll find the registration office easily enough? Also, is there a nearby bike rental place to the campsite?
